Welcome to Serbia

We are sure that you haven’t visited Serbia, which is the most beautiful country in the Balkans. Serbia has lived with Turkish culture for about 500 years, has 9000 Turkish words in its language, and in the bloodstream of the former Yugoslavia.

Serbia is a natural wonder, both summer and winter you will have possibilities for making different activities, socialization and rich nightlife that continues 7/24, people’s warm behaviour and with hospitality towards you, in Serbia, you will feel like you are in Turkey. Let’s get to know them closely.

Serbia is a small country in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, where about 7 million people currently live. During its history, Serbia was also an independent state, but it was also part of other states and empires.

Serbia had the fastest development and great reputation during the Nemanjić dynasty (XII-XIV century). With the Turkish conquests in the Balkans, it first became a vassal state, and from the 15th century as part of the Ottoman Empire. Only at the beginning of the 19th century, with the First and Second Serbian Uprisings, certain characteristics of statehood were acquired, and in 1878, Serbia has declared an independent state. Its borders at the time were mostly within present-day central Serbia.

After the Balkan Wars, the territory expanded, and after the First World War, it allied with the South Slavic peoples. Then the Kingdom of SCS was created, and then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The current borders were established after the Second World War and the abolition of the Monarchy by the communist government.

Nature in Serbia

There are two parts of Serbia. The northern part of Serbia, called Vojvodina, is located in the Pannonian Plain, the site of the former Pannonian Sea. The capital of Vojvodina in Novi Sad and the only mountain in Vojvodina is Fruška Gora, which was an island in the Pannonian Sea. South of Vojvodina and south of the capital Belgrade is a mountainous area. The largest mountains in Serbia are Zlatibor, Zlatar, Tara, Kopaonik, Stara Planina, Shar Planina, Prokletije.

Serbia is a favourite destination among mountaineers because it abounds in different types of rocks, created by the outpouring of magma. The result is rich ore deposits, as well as numerous thermo-mineral springs.

The relief of Serbia is also rich in permanent ice in the high mountains. There are about thirty glacial lakes on Prokletije and Shar Planina. Serbia is also rich in rivers, canyons, gorges, lakes and caves.

Climate of Serbia

Serbia is in the temperate zone and has no access to the sea. The climate is mostly continental. It is characterized by 4 seasons. You can visit Serbia at any time of the year, everyone has their beauties.

Spring and autumn are ideal for touring cities and a long stay in nature while enjoying all the natural beauties. Summer is also a good time to visit cities, combined with a vacation on a river, lake or mountain. In the mountains, you can always cool off from the summer heat and enjoy your stay in the fresh air.

And winter is, of course, the best time to enjoy skiing or simply enjoying the snow on a mountain. Also, don’t forget the New Year’s holidays, because in that period in Belgrade you can have fun at every step. In short, whenever you visit Serbia, you will not make a mistake!

Waters of Serbia

Serbia has no access to the sea, but there are many rivers, lakes, as well as thermal and mineral waters. These waters are used for drinking and healing purposes. Settlements and spas are being built around them, of which there are about 60 in Serbia. Some of them have gained world fame thanks to the beneficial effect of their waters. The most famous spas in Serbia are Vrnjacka Banja, Sokobanja, Prolom Banja, Ribarska Banja, Vrujci, Lukovska Banja, Niska Banja (in central and southern Serbia), Vrdnik, Kanjiza, Banja Junakovic (in Vojvodina).

The most important river in Serbia is the Danube. The course of the Danube through Serbia is 588 kilometres. Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is located at the 1170th kilometre of the Danube, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Precisely because of that position, he was always the target of conquerors. It is a city at a crossroads.

In Serbia, more precisely in the Djerdap gorge, which is also called the “Iron Gate”, there is a point where the Danube is the deepest and narrowest in its entire course. Here, the width is about 150 meters, and the depth is 90 meters. Not far from this point, there is a place where the Danube is the widest, as much as 6.5 kilometres. It is near Golubac and the medieval Golubac fortress. With us, you will have the opportunity to visit all those places and take a boat ride through the incredible Djerdap gorge!

Serbian cuisine

Serbian cuisine, another topic that left its mark on the Ottoman Empire, resembles Turkish cuisine in a way you cannot even imagine. Turska Kafa, Čaj, Rakija, Sarma, Čevapi, Pasulj, Mantija, Burek, Baklava and many more … We are sure that they all sound familiar to you.

The first flavour we want to present you is Ćevapi or Ćevapčići, known as Serbian Kebab. This traditional flavour is similar to İnegöl meatballs, but it is served with local appetizers such as Ajvar and Kupus. In Skadarlija, the bohemian corner of Belgrade, you will find many local taverns, famous for their hospitality. Speaking of the taverns, we should not go without mentioning the Serbian rakija. The most important feature of this drink, which is prepared from different fruits and consequently has different fruit flavours and resembles Turkish raki. Do not be surprised to hear that Serbs, can consume Rakija with almost every meal and consider Rakija as a medicine.

What about Turkish coffee, Turska Kafa? Although its name is Turkish coffee, the only nation that consumes more Turkish coffee than the Turks may be the Serbs. It is not even strange to see a Serb holding Turkish coffee in the streets in the morning. The only difference from us is that they don’t drink in the form of a cup of coffee, but in Nescafe style, but even the name of the container they prepare the coffee is Džezva, namely the coffee pot.

The same goes for baklava and tulumba desserts. You can see Turkish desserts in any patisserie you will visit and say that the names of these desserts are familiar from somewhere.

Serbian cuisine, which you will have no difficulty in getting used to and eating, is worth seeing and trying many more local flavours that we cannot mention. But be sure, you won’t regret it.

– No additional fees will be charged during museum visits, and every place visited within the program will be free of charge. (Tesla Museum, Yugoslavia Museum, Kalemegdan etc.)

– As you can see in many touristic agencies, you will not pay any additional fees to locations that are very close to each other, and if you have time left, you will have the option to go to these locations even if they are not included in the program. (Zemun, Avala Tower, etc.)
